Out today, Stroke: Songs for Chris Knox, a two-CD celebration of the music of celebrated New Zealand artist Chris Knox, who suffered a stoke last June. During his long career, Knox was instrumental in bringing NZ punk and alternative music to international audiences with Tall Dwarfs and Toy Love, and with his solo work. Artists from the U.S. (Jeff Mangum, Yo La Tengo, The Mountain Goats, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Lambchop, Stephin Merritt, Portastatic, Bill Callahan, Lou Barlow, Jay Reatard), his homeland (The Bats, The Verlaines, The Chills) and the world over have donated their time and talent covering songs from Knox’s extensive catalog so that all proceeds can go toward assisting him with his recovery. Terrific story in Sunday’s New York Times about Holly Miranda, whose first solo album, The Magician’s Private Library, comes out this week on XL Recordings. “Recorded two years ago by Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio—an old friend who also happens to be a world-class producer—and financed by Miranda’s publisher, Chrysalis Music, it sat on a shelf for more than a year before a record label came into the picture,” writes Ben Sisario. “As with the Jealous Girlfriends, her album’s most arresting feature is her voice, a sensuous, smoky amber that has inevitably led to Cat Power comparisons. But in place of her old band’s grungy edges, Miranda and Sitek have created a soundscape of rainy, echoey guitars and electronics for her songs, which often begin in murkiness and then soar upward with her falsetto.” Read the whole piece here.
